The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is the United Nations’ Sexual and Reproductive health agency who promote Population and Development for every person, every age, every gender, and every groups. UNFPA’s mission is to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled. UNFPA goals are ending unmet need for family planning, preventable maternal death, and gender-based violence and harmful practices including child marriage and female genital mutilation by 2030. With the principle of Rights and Choices, UNFPA’s mandates contribute directly to the Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 3 (Good health and well-being), Goal 5 (Gender-Equality), Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and Goal 17 (Partnerships).
In Thailand, UNFPA is in its 12th agreement – Country Programme (2022-2026) counter-signed with the Thai government to ensure equal rights and access of all population groups to sexual and reproductive health services, to support Thailand to end gender-based violence and apply the life-cycle approach to population ageing to address aged society in the principle of gender equality and human-rights based approach.
Rationale:
11th July of every year is the World’s Population Day which UNFPA, and our partners jointly celebrate this auspicious occasion annually. In 2024, it is also a great occasion to celebrate 30 years of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) which was organised in 1994 where 179 governments including the Thai government participated in the ICPD and supported the ICPD Program of Action (ICPD PoA). This will highlight the importance and significance of human-centred sustainable development, setting the stage for a recommitment to the ICPD agenda and positioning for the post-2030 population and development agenda worldwide and nationwide.
As we are celebrating the ICPD30, Thailand demonstrates many groundbreaking achievements in population and development. These include huge reduction in preventable maternal deaths, the law to ensure the reduction of the adolescent pregnancy and the Universal Health Coverage with services of sexual and reproductive health for all and life-saving services for survivors of gender-based violence, and youth-friendly services of sexual and reproductive health with digital platforms with meaningful youth engagement to promote rights and choices principles.
To celebrate these achievements and to advocate the investment in all groups of population for the common sustainable future of Thailand amidst population ageing and low fertility, UNFPA Thailand is organising a public event with key following activities:
- Pre event: an online social media contest on “Our #CommonFuture: Investment through Life-Cycle Approach for Sustainable and inclusive Population and Development in Thailand: ลงทุนพัฒนา ทุกเพศ ทุกช่วงวัย เพื่ออนาคตเราสดใสและยั่งยืน” to engage population every stage of life i.e. youth, working population, elder adults, and the general public to reflect their views and priorities; and
- High level opening remarks, keynote speeches and a panel discussion to highlight Thailand’s achievements in population and development for the past 30 years and exchange views on possible strategic directions of investments in all groups of population towards our common sustainable future of Thailand amidst aged society challenges.
