"Embracing Equality: Love Wins" confirming implementation of the Equal Marriage law across Thailand

On January 13, 2025, the Ministry of Interior together with UN in Thailand and partners jointly organised the event “Flag of Love Across Thailand” as part of the "Embracing Equality: Love Wins" project, which across 878 districts across Thailand, 50 districts in Bangkok.

Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, delivered welcoming remarks emphasizing the readiness of the Ministry and the Thai government to register equal marriage for same sex individuals. He highlighted that this law represents a significant step towards marriage equality and human rights, promoting inclusivity and diversity. Thailand is committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly gender equality, and enhancing the transparency of administrative systems across all provinces.

Ms. Michaela Friberg-Storey, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Thailand, highlighted that the implementation of the Marriage Equality Act on 23 January is a formative and significant victory for human rights. UN Thailand applauds Thailand's leadership and dedication to promoting gender diversity and ensuring non-discrimination for all.

Ms. Siriluck Chiengwong, Head of Office of UNFPA Thailand, reflected on a symposium session titled "Rights and Choice without Gender-Based Violence (GBV) for Inclusive Population and Development in Thailand." She congratulated Thailand for elevating its Human Rights and Gender Equality standard through this equal marriage bill. She shared a concerning statistic that Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases in Thailand were underreported to be only approximately 20% of incidents. She urged the audience to work together in Whole-of-Society approach to prevent and end GBV with UNFPA for population of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. In addition, utilizing technology such as the Line @SoSafe platform can help ending GBV by reporting issues and ensuring that society is safe for everyone.

Thailand is the first country in ASEAN to recognize equal marriage. UNFPA is proud to be part of this historical milestone for all population, regardless of gender, group, and age.
