Regional Observance of World Population Day
Thursday, 11th July 2019, at Pimarn Siam Hall, Athenee Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand

World Population Day, which seeks to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues, was established by the then-Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989, an outgrowth of the interest generated by the Day of Five Billion, which was observed on 11 July 1987.

This year's World Population Day calls for global attention to the unfinished business of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development. Twenty-five years have passed since that landmark conference, where 179 governments recognized that reproductive health and gender equality are essential for achieving sustainable development.

On this occasion, UNFPA together with the Thai Ministry of Public Health jointly invite policymakers, advocates, young people with disability, Thai youth council members, institutions, private sector, civil organisations and media to the World Population Day Observation on 11 July 2019 to help advocate reproductive health and rights a reality for all. This observation is part of paving the way to 'the Nairobi Summit', the high-level conference to accelerate efforts to achieve the three zero goals: zero unmet need for family planning information and services, zero preventable maternal deaths, and zero sexual and gender-based violence and harmful practices against women and girls.
