A World Where Every Pregnancy is Wanted

  Press Release

Bangkok - 1 August 2013, The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Contemporary Photography of Thailand Foundation (CPTF) are pleased to invite the entries for the photo contest with the theme of "A world where every pregnancy is wanted".

In line with the theme of 2013 State of World Population Report titled "Adolescent Pregnancy", the contest is aimed at illustrating the demographic change in Thailand through lenses of the photographers.

To announce the event to the public, UNFPA Thailand Country Office and CPTF are organising the press conference at Central Court (glass elevator area), CentralWorld, on Thursday 1 August 2013 from 2:30 PM. Registration starts at 2:00 PM. Apart from UNFPA and CPTF, the photo contest is sponsored by CentralWorld, Earth Safe Foundation and Canon.

Today, Mr. Caspar Peek, UNFPA Representative for Thailand, and Mr. Suwat Liptapanlop, President of the Contemporary Photography Foundation of Thailand, jointly presided over the press conference. Ms. Sanhajutha Chirathivat, President of Earth Safe Foundation, also attended the ceremony.

Mr. Caspar Peek said pregnancy should happen by choice, not by chance. "This means that it should be wanted, and it should be planned," he said.

"Today, the average Thai woman has 1.6 children. This means that Thailand's population is slowly shrinking. So every pregnancy should literally be wanted. This also means that it must be possible for a woman to continue working while she is pregnant, for as long as she can, and come back to her job once she is a mother, while still being able to take care of her baby."

"It takes two to tango. Pregnancy is not only a matter for the future mother but also for the future father. Every child has a right to grow up in a family with both parents taking care of them. Being a father starts when a man and a woman plan their pregnancy together, and continues by supporting the future mother all throughout pregnancy and beyond."

"Sometimes pregnancies are not happy events - not all of them are planned. It might be because the mother is too young, or the father is no longer there. It might be because the young family does not have the means to give their baby everything it needs. In those cases, family and society at large also have a role to play to make sure that those pregnancies, too, have happy endings: a world, and a Thailand, where every pregnancy is truly wanted."

Mr. Suwat Liptapanlop said, "CPFT is pleased to work with UNFPA to show and record stories of people through lenses of photographers. The meaning of birth covers a diverse range of stories. The contest therefore reflects the interpretation of quality birth through the eyes of contestants."

He added, "I believe that birth is a miracle. CPFT therefore is jointly organising the photo contest under the theme "A world where every pregnancy is wanted" to illustrate the importance of family in Thailand. CPFT wants to help capture the memorable shots of family members to demonstrate the significance of paternal love and family bonding according to the theme of the contest."
